God Is In the House–Book Review
God is in the House Summary
Perhaps it will bring you peace to realize that many leaders in Washington still seek His divine guidance in their work. In God is in the House: Congressional Testimonies of Faith, members of Congress reflect on their faith and how it guides them as politicians and legislators in leadership, voting, and responding to our nation’s crises. The book was compiled by Representative Virginia Foxx, who personally asked congressional colleagues who are devout in their Christian faith, representatives who are in a Bible study group with her, and colleagues she knows on a personal level to each contribute an essay.
God is in the House Review
God is in the House: Congressional Testimonies of Faith by Virginia Foxx, a member of Congress, is an uplifting collection of essays by 19 current and former members of the House of Representatives. In these essays they write about their personal religious beliefs, their journey to those beliefs and how those beliefs factored into their decisions to become public servants. The essays are as varied and personal as the members. They represent many different Christian religions with a common thread of faith.
Reading these essays reminds me that we are so much more alike than we are different. I found the messages to be uplifting, inspiring and hopeful. I would love to read more of these testimonies. They give me hope that, despite all the disparaging of public servants these days, many who hold elective office are there because they have a genuine desire to make a positive difference in our country and our communities.
The book is not lengthy (too short in my opinion—I really do wish Ms. Foxx had been able to include more contributors), and its essay format leads to easy reading. This is a book you can easily pick up and read just an essay or two at time. Notable in the book is the foreword by House Speaker Paul Ryan, and an essay by a former house chaplain. Both Republicans and Democrats are well represented, as are 10 major Christian denominations.
God is in the House: Congressional Testimonies of Faith is an enjoyable read and would make a great addition to your personal library or an excellent Christmas gift for the politically-minded Christians on your list.
